DANA: It was just subsidized. LAUGHLIN: It was just subsidized. And even after we became incorporated some fifteen years ago, it was never capitalized. I mean, we have stock, but nobody bought it. DANA: Let's get back to Pound for a moment. LAUGHLIN: Ezra was a lovable person. You know, people think of him as an anti-Semite monster, but he wasn't. DANA: Well, his genius has always seemed rather remote and contradictory. LAUGHLIN: He's a funny case. He neglected his children. LAUGHLIN: I loved that series. It was a lot of work, because it involved a lot of correspondence with the poets getting them to cut their selection down to thirty-two pages. DANA: Godine is doing something like that today. LAUGHLIN: He's done some beautiful chapbooks. DANA: Right. That series with Scott Momaday and George Starbuck. LAUGHLIN: He's done some fine books. I have great respect for David; he's really a high-standard man. The quality of design and printing in his books is simply superb.
